Twentieth Century Theatre - Non Realism

Non-realism was a dramatic movement that emerged in 1885 and signaled the beginning of modern theatre. Artists reacted against representing the natural world on stage.
Modernism could be seen emerging, especially in the visual arts as abstract paintings and sculptures appeared. Playwrights and directors began to use non-realistic forms and styles in their plays such as Symbolism, Dreams and Subconscious, Expressionism, Futurism and Dada.

Although seemingly short lived, there is no doubt that these modern movements created waves, opened up a whole new world of possibilities to other artists and influenced later works.

Take a look at the following links ‘The Intruder’ (yet to come), 'The Blind' and a silent Expressionist film ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ and post a comment expressing what you thought.

***Caution*** Last last video may contain some horror scenes.

  1. Today was alot of fun, the way we pretended to be different things and have different emotions. The emotion thing in groups was cool and liked what everyone did. I just couldnt look away.

  3. Yeh I know I had a ball. I learnt some pretty cool stuff myself. ;-)
LOVED the last activity too! This topic really ties in well with the Asian inspired theatre work we did. Repition, use of space and lines, non-naturalism etc etc.

I loved the youtube flicks! Sooo relevant to today's topic! 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’shows us that abstract/dream/fantasy- like style we discussed. The random scenary and symbolism. Great to see how one piece of theatre can inspire so many forms to come! I also loved 'The Blind', lots of repition and is the perfect example of a performance that can be developed from that short practical task we all took part in.
Awesome stuff. If you guys come across anything else, please post!
    Sorry I was sick, I hope ya'll didn't catch my germs! :-P

  4. sorry for the late response, stuff happening at home

I enjoyed the last activity on thursday. How Our group showed the different types of hate. when i had to say...i mean shout my type of hate, i got a bit nervous cause of mr arney looking through the computer pod window.

I had a look at the videos (even the commedia dell' arte ones). "the Blind" was a bit....hmmm i dont know how to describe it, i'll just say it wasn't my cup of tea (i know weird saying but i've heard it from somwhere). It did have repition like the blind moving around the set while others are clapping so they can hear where to go. I guess i just didnt quite understand it. "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari" looks interesting. The set is very abstract and reminds me of one of those crooked houses in theme parks where water runs up and everything is everywhere.

When i have time i'll have a look for new videos, right now i need to finish other homework.

    Chao bounce

  6. I haven't watched the videos yet but I've been really enjoying the last few lessons on non-realism. It's kind of freaky but cool, using non-tradition means to convey regular feelings.
I really liked the "hate" performance, it really expressed what they were feeling.
